Greatest Show On Snow
By Kyle Dickerson

Every year, some of the finest athletes from across the state of Tennessee converge on the small township of Gatlinburg, tucked away high in the cover of the Smoky Mountains. They roll into town equipped with a spirit for competition, a will to improve, an undying desire to overcome all odds, and a positive air that envelopes everyone within miles. 2010 was no different.

In the early morning of February 2nd, a low rumble grew, as a crowd gathered near the bottom of Ober Mountain. High above the town of Gatlinburg, crisp air bit at the lungs, and giant flakes of snow danced through the morning sky. Just up the hill, through a thin line of trees, flashes of color drew the attention of spectators. And as the first athlete rounded the corner into the straightaway, the crowd erupted. Moments later, following a weaving line of coaches and her fellow athletes, an Alpine Skiing competitor came whipping into view with the Special Olympics torch held high for all to see. Making her way to the stand, her face stretched with a smile, she reached high into the air and touched off the Olympic Flame, signifying the beginning of the 2010 Tennessee Special Olympics State Winter Games.

While some athletes attend the games each year, competing in Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding, many athletes come to the games with very basic knowledge of the sports. Coaches spend the first day giving instruction to their athletes and promoting a work ethic among the group that encourages them to complete the task, positively striving for greatness. The intimate nature of the small groups allows for closer one-on-one coaching, a positive aspect, as most coaches rarely interact directly with athletes from their own area. “It’s important to make all the athletes feel comfortable with you as a coach, and becoming friends is that first step,” said Kyle Dickerson, a snowboarding coach out of Spring Hill, TN.

In an effort to combat the high costs of the competition, the state office made the difficult decision to exclude ice skating from this year’s sports. This decision considerably decreased the number of participating athletes, as the ice skating portion boasted the largest number of competitors in past years. Meg Takahashi, Director of Competitions for Special Olympics Tennessee, stated that even though the numbers were lower this year, the event was very manageable. “The competition was one of the best we’ve had in years. This had a great deal to do with the warm acceptance of Gatlinburg and Ober Mountain,” said Takahashi.

The city of Gatlinburg has always welcomed the event, and shows immeasurable support for both the athletes and their families. From the local businesses to the residents who call the area home, everyone makes the competitors, their coaches, and their families feel right at home. This year, Ober donated meals to the athletes and coaches, the city donated their convention center for the opening ceremonies, and local groups such as the American Legion and Smoky Mountain Ski Club donated their time and talents to ensure the experience was the most it could be for the athletes.

As Special Olympics Tennessee journeys into 2010, many great opportunities lie ahead for the athletes, coaches, supporters, and the state of Tennessee. The program is always in need of support, and you can learn more about those opportunities at the state website, www.specialolympicstn.org. And the next time you see one of our state’s great athletes, pat them on the back and tell them you’re proud of them. There’s no greater support that can be asked for.
